Soft Machine with Jimi Hendrix – Hendrix was a huge supporter.

My first exposure to The Soft Machine came in 1968 when they opened for Jimi Hendrix – it was a turning point in my musical journey (yep, it was a journey – there was a lot to discover). I became an instant fan and never stopped.

Tonight it’s a track (actually 3 tracks) off their first album. We Did It Again, followed by Plus Belle Qu`une Poubelle, Why Are We Sleeping? and Box 25/4LID.

Glimpses of Experimental Rock to come, and the beginnings of Progressive Rock.

Soft Machine have gone on to the stuff of legends now – still more or less together, but not in their original form. They have, if anything, toned down quite a bit and took a turn for the Avant-Garde as far as Jazz goes some years back. But the spirit is still there.

And if you’ve never heard of them, or never heard them, here’s a chance to hear them when it was all new and insane all at the same time.
