More Americana, by way of The Eastman School of Music, and the orchestra conducted by founder, champion and cheering section Howard Hanson.

This week it’s a performance of the Folk Suite by composer and professor Lyndol Mitchell (1923-1963), performed by the orchestra during this broadcast of Pioneers Of Music, which ran over the NBC Radio Network in the early 1950s.

With the exception of a few recordings, mostly out of print, the music of Lyndol Mitchell is almost completely forgotten. Tuneful and well thought-out, but not revelatory and certainly conservative in its approach. But it is highly evocative of a period of time and a place in American history, and for that reason alone it deserves much better treatment than it’s currently getting – which is none at all.

This was the last program of the season for this Pioneers Of Music series. I let it run into the credits and show outro. I have run the other pieces from this broadcast at other times over the past year or two, but I wanted the Mitchell piece to stand on it’s own.

Enjoy it and enjoy the remainder of the weekend. Since it’s June and everything . . . .
