Kicking off the week on a West Coast Cool School note tonight with a track from a long-lost album by the great vibraphonist Teddy Charles and an all-star crew, originally issued in 1957 on Atlantic and only recently seeing the light of reissue.

With a group featuring Charles Mingus on bass, Ed Shaughnessy on drums and Hal Overton on piano, Charles whips up a nice concoction of Cool and Mellow. That this album wasn’t reissued until last year, and then only in Japan, is something of a mystery. But better late than never seems to be the byword with a lot of these undiscovered gems.

Take a listen at what you’ve been missing.
