Only 5 years ago, but this April 20th was loaded with awe and wonder in 2010. The devastating Volcano which erupted in Iceland and spewed a massive cloud of ash over most of Europe was beginning to show signs of easing up.

What that meant was, the thousands of flights which had been cancelled since April 15 could resume flying. But “could” and “did” were from different planets. And much of the status of a flight resuming had a lot to do with which way the wind was blowing. As of news time, one flight had successfully landed at Heathrow, and fingers were crossed more would resume shortly with some 60% of carriers stranded throughout Europe waiting for the green light.

In other news – after 2 1/2 years worth of hearings over salt, the FDA was getting close to imposing new limits on the amount of salt in the food we buy. The FDA wanted to impose actual legal limits on salt consumption, but the Salt Institute wasn’t crazy about the idea, saying the FDA took the side of “junk science” over the issue.

Speaking of food; the School Nutrition Program, in place since World War 2, was coming under fire from advocacy groups who were complaining the amount of Junk Food in the average school diet was the primary cause for the vast majority of obesity cases among school-age children in the U.S.

The “Don’t Ask – Don’t Tell” policy towards Gays in the Military was coming under fire, as protestors were bent on disrupting an appearance by President Obama at a Democratic fundraiser. But another issue was taking center-stage; Campaign Finance overhaul, which many blamed squarely on Wall Street, and which the President said wasn’t working.

The Government Fraud charges leveled at Goldman-Sachs were winding up being the tip of the iceberg, as Goldman-Sachs sought the aid of a former Obama and Clinton adviser Gregory Craig for help in fighting the charges. More cases were promised, but which ones and for what weren’t clear for the time being.

And the question of what happens to all the information stored in the office copier when the copier is replaced? Come to find out, it stores an image of every document scanned and copied or e-mailed, and doesn’t go away. Steps were being taken to develop software to insure of wiping a copier’s memory before it gets replaced.

And that’s a small slice of what went on, this April 20th in 2010 as reported by The CBS World News Roundup.
