Café Tacvba are not strangers to many audiences up here – having been one of the must-see bands during the 2013 SXSW Festival in Austin. They’ve done several radio sessions for, among others, KEXP and have been getting their message out across several borders in recent years.

They’ve come to epitomize everything that’s fresh and exciting about the Indie scene in Mexico, branching off from the Rock en Español movement of the late 1990s. And their popularity has been making big strides in recent year. In addition to great word of mouth from SXSW, they were also standouts at the 2014 Lollapalooza Chile festival.

Café Tacvba have been around since 1989, and gained huge popularity beginning in the early 90s. The band is named after a local cafe in Mexico City; Café Tacuba. But rather than risk of legal hassles, swapped the u for a v.

With some 7 albums under their belts, the band have kept the same lineup since inception, when they were actively being a garage band. With a few additions of musicians during live concerts, the core of the band is kept with the same 4 members.

Tonight it’s an in-studio session from 2013 which I believe the band did as a promotion via their label Universal in Mexico.

And since it’s Cinco de Mayo, it’s a good excuse to run this session as a way of letting you know, if you don’t already, that there’s a lot happening just to the South of us, and it needs to be checked out.

In the meantime – crank this one up and enjoy. If you don’t know the language, no problem. As we all know, Rock is the universal language and knows no borders.
