The venerable, always dependable Traffic this weekend. Perennial favorites and one of the best bands to come out of the late 1960s and through the 1970s.
Fronted by Stevie Winwood, Traffic went through a series of break-ups and patch-ups during their formative years. But the band was always solid, and always attracted first-class players. And Winwood on his own was part of more than one supergroup and had one of the most distinctive voices in Rock. Thankfully, for everyone, he’s going just as strong as ever on a solo career that has spanned a few decades and, on top of the legions of faithful who have been following his career over the years, he is attracting a whole new audience who missed it the first time around.
But this weekend, it’s Traffic from 1970, putting it back together and performing at the BBC’s Paris Theatre on April 30, 1970. Hosted by the legendary John Peel this is one of those concerts that combines vintage Traffic (a-la 1968) to more recent vintage (1970) and songs from the pivotal John Barleycorn Must Die album.
Great times all around and a pleasure to have along on a weekend. I would play it loud – you don’t have to, but enjoy it just the same.
