Sharon Jones – one more loss in the midst of an already overflowing year of sadness.

Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings – Live In Paris – RTL Radio – July 3, 2012

In a year that has fairly overflowed with loss, add one more unique and priceless voice to that number. Sharon Jones, the charismatic Soul singer and powerhouse died on Friday, succumbing to her battle with Pancreatic Cancer at 60. Her death came, surrounded by members of her band and family – ending a struggle that was, at first hopeful, but remission gave way to a return earlier this year.

Putting in a full tour schedule this summer, even while undergoing Chemotherapy, Jones was performing right up to the end. Performing, as she told an interviewer, was her therapy.

So as a tribute to a wonderful voice and powerful presence, here is a concert I ran across when I was looking for something to run this weekend. It’s a concert she did in Paris, recorded by RTL and featuring a set she did on July 3, 2012.

A vibrant, vital artist whose contribution will be with us for a very long time to come.

RIP Sharon Jones – you will be missed.
