The Strokes – In Session for John Peel – June 27, 2001 – BBC Radio 1

New York Indie/Garage-Rock revivalists The Strokes to kick off Thanksgiving Week. Their first, and only session for John Peel, recorded on June 8, 2001 and broadcast on June 27th.

A critically acclaimed band from the get-go, The Strokes formed in 1998. By 2001 (when this session was recorded) their debut album was released and would skyrocket to number 8 on Rolling Stone’s Best Debut Albums of All Time. And shortly after that scored the Number 2 position on Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Albums of the 00’s and 199 on their 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

This session comes just prior to the release of their debut album, and coincides with the release of their debut ep, The Modern Age, which starts off this session. Ironically, it was this ep, which was sent as a demo to the reformed Rough Trade Records in the UK that got immediate attention and started the ball rolling.

With the success of their debut, they embarked on a World Tour, cementing their initial critical excitement in the U.S. and The UK and taking it to New Zealand, Australia and Japan. They’ve enjoyed huge success ever since.

Still together, but keeping it lively with side projects, The Strokes are currently working on new material, with a new album promised to come out “sometime soon” – I suspect 2017 should see something new coming out.

In the meantime, here is a reminder of their initial excitement and their first session for John Peel.

And while you’re listening, please consider chipping in what you can for Past Daily’s Fall Fundraiser. We’re only going to be hounding you for 20 days this time, and 4 have already gone. But we’ve got a lot of catching up to do, and your donations are coming in. Keep up the great work. If we keep going, we’ll have a new and upgraded website in 2017 and we wont have to worry about a fatal crash taking 5 years of posts with it. But anything can happen between now and then, and your tax deductible contributions are critical right now if we’re going to still be around this time next year. We need your help and anything you can chip in will be greatly appreciated.

All you have to do, is click on the link in the box below and make your pledge. And if you want, grab one of the premiums that are going fast, as our way of saying thank you. A Tax write-off and freebies, sounds like a great deal. All we need is your support and your donations in order to keep going. Fingers crossed you can make that pledge.
