News for this October 21st in 1978 had much to do with the continuing, on-again-off-again-stop-and-start Egyptian-Israeli Peace Talks going on at Camp David. Hitting snags on a seemingly hourly basis, the talks were snagged again on this day. The principals were heading back to respective capitols to give reports and assessments, much of it gloomy. But the talks were schedule to continue with American and Egyptian officials insisting the talks hadn’t been derailed, but this was a detour of sorts and more work was required to hammer things out. Israelis, on the other hand, were less optimistic. With members of the Knesset expressing doubts the talks could, or would continue and that the Egyptians were asking for too many concessions on the parts of the Israelis to make a workable peace plan acceptable. What was being called for was continued debate in the Knesset before things could go further. Further complicating matters was news that both Begin and Sadat were to be in New York to accept an award on November 2nd, but it was doubtful any sort of agreement would be arrived at by then.

And so it went . . . .

But there were other fish in the fryer, and still others waiting to jump in.

Election problems in Alaska with the Alaskan Supreme Court tossing in its two cents over the controversy surrounding the Gubernatorial primary which saw Republican candidate Walter Hickel lose by less than 100 votes. The Alaskan Supreme Court overturned a ruling by a lower court calling for a new election. They agreed with the lower court in saying election officials truly screwed up, but it wasn’t sufficient enough to warrant a new election. Hickel was meeting with his people to figure out the next move – whether to appeal the Alaska Supreme Court findings and go all the way to SCOTUS, or lick wounds and quietly walk away.

President Jimmy Carter was embarking on a U.S. tour in support of Democratic candidates running in the off-year election. Which was probably good, as storm clouds were brewing at the Justice Department over the matter of Bert Lance. President Carter’s former Budget Director was now the object of a Federal Grand Jury looking into a file cabinet full of financial improprieties while he served under Carter.

Pope John Paul II was getting ready to be inaugurated as the new Pontiff, replacing John Paul I who had died short after taking office. Security was expected to be tight.

And that was just a small fraction of what happened on this fractured October 21st in 1978, as presented by The CBS World News Roundup.
