In their 37 years of its existence, the only thing that has remained constant with The Cure is lead singer/writer/guitarist/founding member Robert Smith.
Numerous personnel changes in all that time, numerous directions – and a veritable dartboard of musical classifications – from Punk, post-punk, New Wave, Goth, Alternative and Rock n’ Roll; it’s run the gamut. However, after 27 million album sales (as of 2004), 13 albums, 10 eps and 30 singles, it would be safe to say they’ve been doing things right here and there. For one thing, The Cure were one of the first bands to crossover from Underground to Mainstream and it paved the way for a lot of similar bands to follow suit. And even though they were one of the definitive Goth bands in the early 1980s, The Cure’s Robert Smith has often considered them un-classifiable.
Tonight it’s the fourth session done for the John Peel program at The BBC. Recorded on January 7, 1981.
