Another classic this weekend. Duke Ellington and His Famous Orchestra, celebrating 25 years on this anniversary broadcast, live from The Birdland on Broadway and 53rd Street in New York. Broadcast on November 25, 1952.

A veritable who’s who of outstanding and legendary soloists, along with vocals by Jimmy Grissom and Betty Rochè. An all-star occasion with the inimitable Duke Ellington holding court.

A little under an hour (50 minutes as advertised), and a wonderful introduction to those of you who may not be all that familiar with Duke Ellington. And a solid reminder of just how great great can be.

Turn it up.

  1. Thanks for posting this. If the dates are right in Ellington discographies, the date of this broadcast is most likely from Nov 21, 23 or 25.

    • Thanks for the clarification on this – Oddly, the dates on the NBC discs (there are three shows,as you stated, listed as on the labels as November 20, 22, and 25th). The one I listed is the 25th and I went in and changed that. The others, I haven’t posted yet. But I will go with the discography dates as opposed to the NBC dates as they are sometimes notoriously wrong in many cases.
