Some Heartland Rock tonight, via one of its most popular practitioners, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Recorded live in concert at Oxford University in the UK in 1980 by the BBC for their BBC Goes To College series.

Tom Petty has been hugely popular, practically since The Heartbreakers got started in 1976. Although they started off slowly in the U.S., they were big hits in the UK from the time of their first album release. A string of memorable singles and albums later, many of which became platinum best sellers, and Petty has achieved American Institution status, continuing today, collaborating with a veritable who’s who in music.

But tonight it’s back to the earlier days, right around the period of Damn The Torpedoes and a fresh start with a new label, having settled legal hassles with MCA and his previous label the then-defunct Shelter. Already well established in England, they had a built-in warm welcome when they played this gig at Oxford Poly.

And you get to feel the love in the room tonight.

Crank it up and relax.
