Over to Lugano Switzerland this week for a concert by l’Orchestre de la Suisse Italienne led by Polish conductor-on-the-rise Michael Nesterowicz and featuring Wunderkind  Violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja in Beethoven’s celebrated Violin Concerto in D.

Relayed from Italian-Swiss Radio over to the venerable Radio France Musique, this concert was recorded on November 13th of last year and also features works by Ernest Bloch, violin encores by Gyorgy Kurtag, Vaughan-Williams and an encore from the orchestra by Sibelius.

Here’s what’s on the player:

1. Ernest Bloch
In Memoriam (1952)

2. Ludwig Van Beethoven
Concerto in D Major Op.61 (1806) *
Allegro ma non troppo
Larghetto
Rondo

* Patricia Kopatchinskaja, vln.

Encores – Gyorgy Kurtag
Faerie automnen, Ext. Signs, Games and Messages (1961-2005) *
Es zupfte jemand mich am Kleid No. 8, Ext. of Kafka Fragments Op.24 (1985-1987) *
The Carenza Jig (1989-1997), Ext. Signs, Games and Messages (1961-2005) *

3. Ralph Vaughan Williams
Symphony No. 5 in D Major (1938-1943)
Prelude
Scherzo
Romance

Encore – Jean Sibelius
Valse triste Op.44 No. 1 (1904)

A nicely well-balanced and engaging concert featuring two up-and-comer performers and an orchestra we don’t get to hear that much.

Enjoy – it’s Wednesday after all.
