Over to Rome this week for a concert from the 2013 Amiata Piano Festival featuring a trio consisting of Gabriele Pieranunzi violin, Francesco Fiore, viola and the late Alexander Ivashkin, cello.

The concert was recoded by RAI Radio 3 on June 29, 2013.

It’s a sad concert, in that it was one of the last, if not the last concert featuring the great Russian Cellist, Alexander Ivashkin before his diagnosis of pancreatic Cancer and his death in January this year.

This concert features Ivashkin along with violinist Gabriele Pieranunzi and viola Francesco Fiore in music by Beethoven, Kodaly and Bohuslav Martinu.

The concert runs almost two hours, so it’s broken up between two players. Here’s the rundown:

Part 1 (top player)
1. Ludwig van Beethoven
Serenata per violino, viola e violoncello in re maggiore op. 8
– Marcia (Allegro) – Adagio
Menuetto (Allegretto)
– Adagio
– Allegretto alla Polacca
Tema con variazioni – Andante quasi allegretto

2. Zoltán Kodály
Duo per violino e violoncello op. 7
– Allegro serioso
– Non troppo adagio
– Maestoso e largamente ma non troppo lento

Part 2 (lower player)
1. Bohuslav Martinu
Tre madrigali per violino e viola
– Poco Allegro
– Poco Andante
– Allegro

2. Ludwig van Beethoven
Trio in do minore per violino, viola e violoncello n. 3 op. 9
– Allegro con spirito
– Adagio con espressione
– Scherzo, allegro molto vivace
– Finale. Presto

3. (Encore) Ludwig van Beethoven
dal Trio in sol maggiore per violino viola e violoncello op 9 n 1
– Presto

A fine, but bittersweet concert featuring one of the gifted and remarkable musicians in recent memory.

RIP – Alexander Ivashkin (1948-2014)

    • My Pleasure! When I initially put this post up I wasn’t aware this was Alexander Ivashkin’s last concert. So it’s a great concert and a poignant one at the same time. Glad you liked it!
