Continuing our Boston Symphony in Rehearsal this week, Charles Munch once again leads the BSO through a rehearsal of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony Number 6 (or, according to announcer Olin Downes – “His Pathetic Symphony . . .”). It was recorded as-if-happened on December 19th, 1949.

Munch and the BSO recorded the Tchaikovsky Pathetique commercially for RCA Victor, and it became one of those sonic showpieces, used for the express purpose of showing off your new hi-fi.

Munch gives the Russian war-horse a French twist to the proceedings and the end result is classic Charles Munch and classic Boston Symphony.

Enjoy until next week . . . .
