Since we’re sticking around in the 70s so far today, I thought I would keep it going with an appearance by Lonnie Liston Smith from 1973.
Smith, one of the pioneering keyboard players in the Jazz/Funk/Fusion/Quiet Storm genre, is featured here just after his stint with Miles Davis, where he formed his own group, Cosmic Echoes. This broadcast performance features Stanley Clarke on bass, Norman Connors, percussion, Charles Sullivan on trumpet and George Barron on sax.
A short set (a few seconds under a half-hour) also features a short interview with Smith where he discusses what he’s exploring, what Cosmic Echoes is all about. Just prior to his transition over to Funk, he was actively involved in Free Jazz via his close association with Pharoah Sanders. Cosmic Echoes was a continuation of that, for the time being. But as Lonnie Liston Smith pointed out in the his interview, the journey had no set destination.
