A short one this week – a little under 6 minutes. The Sonatine for Solo Violin by the Conductor/Composer Jean Martinon, as played in this broadcast recital, circa 1952 by the 1951 Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Prize Winner Gérard Jarry.
After winning the prize, at the tender age of 16, Jarry went on to an illustrious career as well as Professor of Violin at the Paris Conservatory where he taught until his death in 2004. Jarry was a much sought after violinist for contemporary works, as well as a founding member of the famous Trio á cordes Francais in 1959.
It’s doubtful this broadcast performance has been reissued and it’s not certain the Martinon Sonatine (of which there are 3) has been widely played or recorded.
But enjoy anyway.
