Continuing with 78s tonight. This one comes by one of the inimitable High Priests of Bop, Arnett Cobb and a session he did for Apollo records in 1947. This one, Top Flight was issued as Apollo #770, part of the Jazz Masterworks series.
It’s always fascinating to listen to what was going on with the smaller labels at the time. Cobb was in good company during his stay at Apollo. Sharing the label with such luminaries as Coleman Hawkins, Illinois Jacquet, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis and Erroll Garner, Cobb was part of that wave which revolutionized Jazz and Music in general. Small Record labels and the dawn of Be-Bop were almost synonymous.
A little scratchy, and played probably a lot during it’s day, here is what an Arnett Cobb 78 sounded like and what small labels were up to in 1947. Maybe later on we’ll dig around and check out some of the mainstream stuff during the period – just to give you an idea of what contrasts were all about at the time.
