In retrospect, this May 30th in 2000 was less hysterical than most. The Stock Market made a surprise leap, causing many to get downright giddy and offer further evidence the economy was doing a lot better than most people thought.
SCOTUS Justice Sandra Day O’Connor rejected an emergency petition, clearing the way for an Oregon law granting many adoptees access to their birth certificates, while it considered the constitutionality of such a law. Opinions were divided, but as of May 30th 2000, it was okay to find out who your real parents were, and real parents to find out what happened to your adopted kids.
President Clinton landed in Lisbon, Portugal on the first leg of what would be his last trip to Europe as President.
The Senate race in New York was on with Republican Rick Lazio tossing verbal brickbats at Democratic candidate Hilary Rodham Clinton. A lively time was guaranteed for all.
And INS Official Mariano Faget was found guilty of espionage by a Miami Federal Court jury. Faget was accused of passing secrets to Cuba after being caught in a sting operation where he was fed false reports that a high-ranking Cuban official was about to defect to the U.S. Next up – conviction.
And former Big Band singer and Band leader Tex Beneke died. Beneke began as a singer for the Glenn Miller Orchestra, taking over leadership of the band when Glenn Miller died in 1944.
