This is one of those instances where the preservation of a performance by a band on video and audio proved to be crucial in presenting what was one of the surprise hits of a festival.

Jupiter Lion is a Spanish band, hailing from Valencia. But they probably have more in common with the purveyors of Space/experimental/electronica of German groups like Can, Faust and Neu! than their fellow inhabitants of Valencia or Barcelona.

Unfortunately for the audience, the rain was constant during the set, and the audience was reduced to a smattering of hearty souls with umbrellas and raincoats. For their troubles, they were rewarded with a standout performance by one of the more exciting bands to come out of Spain in a while. They have been warmly reviewed by the European press since 2013, drawing favorable comparisons to the halcyon days of German Prog Rock of the 70s and the new resurgence in Psychedelia. It’s a safe bet you’ll be hearing a lot more of them in the coming months.

In the meantime, here is their set, as recorded the day before yesterday (June 5th). You don’t need to dodge rain or scramble for an umbrella in order to hear it.

Lucky you.

Play loud anyway.
