More sad news this week. Little Jimmy Scott, one of the most distinctive and compelling voices in Jazz passed away today at the age of 88.

88 is a life well lived. But Little Jimmy Scott had more than his fair share of ups and downs during his long career. That he resurrected a career and was around long enough to receive the praise, admiration, accolades and acknowledgements from the countless artists he influenced, speaks to just how enduring and timeless this artist was.

His material ran the gamut, but he did everything with a sense of commitment and integrity and he made every song, no matter how standard or obscure it was, completely and distinctly his own.

Tonight it’s a track from a 1960 session, which produced An Evening In Paradise.

If you’ve never heard him before – or only heard about him, but never actually heard one of the most moving and engaging voices in Jazz, here’s a chance to become acquainted. Most of his recorded material is available via reissue, and I would urge you to check out his recorded legacy.

RIP Little Jimmy Scott – the voice is stilled, but the song will be around forever.
