One of my favorite bands of all time tonight. Can were part of that initial wave of Progressive music to come out of Europe in the early 1970s. Initially raw and spontaneous, and featuring at one point the mercurial Damo Suzuki on vocals, their sound evolved and smoothed out in the ensuing years, becoming more spacial and cerebral as a result. They have become the benchmark for Progressive music of the 70s and have gone on to become major influences to many bands ever since. Their music is timeless and perpetually fresh.

Tonight it’s a concert recorded in Lyon France in January of 1976, a little over a year after the release of the groundbreaking Soon Over Babaluma (1974). It’s classic Can and a contrast to their earlier concerts. Can have always been an exciting band to listen to, even from the beginning. To hear them during this period is to find them engaging and much tighter as a unit.

If you aren’t familiar with Can, you should check out the earlier material as well. It’s a contrast to this concert. But Can could be a lot of different things – what they always were was great, and an unpredictable trip well-worth taking.

I would play this one loud if I were you – but that’s me.
