And another one . . . . the news today that keyboard player Dave Greenfield passed away earlier today from complications of COVID-19. The insanity that so many people in the arts are succumbing to this pandemic is horrifying – that this nightly musical respite from the day-to-day grind has turned into a perpetual memorial is something that would never occur to me in a million years when I began Past Daily. It was all about turning you on to music you might not be familiar with or kick-starting your memory for things you may have forgotten – it was never about memorializing or paying tribute – yet it’s come to this. And again tonight, it’s come to this.

I don’t know where this is all heading, as I am afraid none of us are – does going to a concert or a club now become nostalgia? Memories of things past? I certainly hope not – so many friends are struggling with the notion of how to make music and get it out to people while being able to scratch a living from it. The best we can do is support where and how we can – I am trying to do what I can to get word out to you and encourage your support. In the meantime, a moment of remembrance for Dave Greenfield and his immeasurable contribution to one of the pioneering bands during the Punk era.

I originally posted this in 2014 – times have changed – we all have changed.

While we’re sifting through the festival concerts from this past weekend, here’ something from the Oldies Department to get your week started.

Punk icons The Stranglers, in concert from the Paris Theater in London, from March 24, 1977.

Certainly one of the longest surviving original bands from the Punk Period, The Stranglers got started in 1974. And even though they’ve gone through a number of personnel changes in the ensuing 40 years, their sound is still intact.

But as a reminder of what the fuss was all about during the halcyon days of the Punk Movement in 1977, here they are in concert from the BBC‘s Paris Theater in London. Recorded by the venerable BBC Radio 1 – 22 minutes worth of vintage Stranglers.

Doesn’t get too much better than that.
