Even though festival season is winding down, there are still a few great ones to be had and still some wonderful surprises to be found. One of those was the appearance last weekend of Kris Berry & Perquisite, a band who embraces Soul, Rock, Jazz, Americana, R&B and have only been around since 2011. But in a short period of time have gotten a lot of attention and good press, particularly for their latest release Lovestruck Puzzles, which came out in September of last year. Their ITGWO concert was a high point of the festival. Kris Berry has a sultry, engaging and intoxicating voice. Her band is the perfect compliment – they are one tight ensemble and it was a complete pleasure listening to this gig more than twice.

Although primarily based in Amsterdam, they’ve been performing around London of late, and horizons look expanding for this Dutch/Caribbean aggregation.

I would definitely peg Kris Berry & Perquisite as a band to watch in the coming months/year. They are just getting started and it will be great to see how audiences over here (in the States) respond to them.

For all the pessimism I hear about the state of affairs in Music lately, I hear bands like this and I know the pessimism isn’t warranted. The future is in good hands – don’t kid yourself. They still need your support and they are still breaking new ground.

Turn this one up – even though, for some reason it’s a mono mix (dunno why). VPRO have otherwise done their usual stellar job.

While you’re checking out Kris Berry & The Perquisite, please consider chipping in a few bucks to help keep Past Daily and the Gordon Skene Sound Archive (the treasure trove of rare and long-lost recordings) doing what they do best; preserving, restoring and sharing amazing sounds with you.
