More bad news tonight. It was learned earlier today that Tim Hauser, one of the founding members of Manhattan Transfer had died earlier today. Details are sketchy and elude to a brief illness. But the fact of the matter is, one of the nicest people, and a sparkling talent who helped guide one of Americas finest Vocal Jazz ensembles has left us.
Anyone who has even the remotest interest in vocal Jazz instantly knows who Manhattan Transfer are. They’re a virtual encyclopedia of the Great American Song and stylists in the great vocal tradition going back to the early days of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross.
Tim was a walking reference book. His knowledge of vocal music was thorough. His one big love was Doo-Wop and his knowledge of who did what and when was a virtual education in itself. Tim seemed to know everybody – and everybody who knew him loved Tim.
He leaves a legacy and an indelible mark on the American Jazz scene. He also leaves countless friends, associates, cohorts and admirers – and anyone who remembers listening to Java-Jive from their very first album for Capitol in 1971 knows how special they were from the get-go – and how special Tim was.
As a reminder of just how much talent made up Manhattan Transfer, and what a tremendous gift Tim had, here is a concert they did in Basel Switzerland, featuring Manhattan Transfer with the BBC Big Band, recorded by AVO in Basel on November 8, 2006.
Rest in Peace Tim – you made lovely music and you had a wonderful journey.
