The legendary Elvin Jones this weekend, with his quintet featuring a young Jan Hammer on keyboards. Also appearing alongside Jones is Joe Farrell on Tenor Sax – Frank Foster on Soprano sax and Gene Perla on Bass. The whole thing was duly recorded and broadcast live by Pacifica station WBAI in New York on June 24, 1971 as part of their Jazz in the Garden series of concerts from the MOMA Sculpture Gallery.

Don’t hold me to it but I think, by looking at the date, that this concert precedes Hammer’s joining as founding member of John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra by a few weeks.

In any case, it’s a spirited performance and everybody falls in quite nicely. The sound is good for the period and WBAI just lets the whole thing roll without stopping or slapping commentary over everything.

Good sounds for a Sunday – crank it up and relax.
