Some festive Americana for this holiday from none other than the legendary Van Dyke Parks, along with an assembled multitude of musicians in a memorable concert from the 1996 Crossing Borders Festival, recorded live before a sold-out audience at Phillipszaal in Amsterdam on September 12, 1996.

Van Dyke Parks is a composer of many hats and a myriad of styles. And all of them are highly evocative and unmistakably American. So here we are, in the middle of what is a customary American holiday, so why not have one of the principle exponents of musical Americana than Van Dyke Parks?

Probably not as well known to a newer audience than one who has been following him for the better part of 40 years, Parks has been involved in scores of projects over the years, collaborating with everyone from Brian Wilson to Little Feat, almost single-handedly resurrecting Calypso. An early practitioner of Sunshine Pop. A composer of numerous film and television scores. In short, a go-to guy for the musical note.

Enjoy the next hour and 15 minutes and check out the music of Van Dyke Parks. It’s all over the place, and you may not have realized it. But he is definitely someone whose music is essential to your library. And besides, it goes well with the holidays.

Turn it up and loosen the belt and relax.
