A nod to the beginnings of Prog-Rock via keyboard virtuoso Brian Auger, along with vocalist Julie Driscoll and The Trinity.
Together a short period of time, and via various incarnations, solo endeavors and side-projects, Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll were probably more closely associated with Jazz. But their rock leanings took what they were doing into new and interesting directions. And even though they weren’t considered really Pop at the time either, their album Open was a big hit, and their rendition of Bob Dylan’s This Wheel’s On Fire became a top 5 hit for them in 1968.
The Trinity dissolved in 1970 and Brian Auger formed Oblivion Express as well as continuing on a solo career, while Julie Driscoll became involved with Keith Tippett and branched into experimental Jazz, recording with Tippett’s Centipede before taking the plunge and becoming Julie Tippetts and launched a successful career that continues to this day.
These early BBC sessions (of which there are several) come from the period 1968-1969 when The Trinity were in full bloom and their critical as well as commercial success were on the rise.
Definitely some of the pivotal figures in the Progressive Rock as well as Fusion and Experimental movements in the UK. If you aren’t familiar with them, you should check them out, as solo artists as well as group members. Julie Tippetts’ solo work is not to be missed.
