Another classic concert this week. The New York Philharmonic with guest conductor Raphael Kubelik in a concert featuring only two works – the Double Concerto of Bohuslav Martinu and the Symphony Number 3 (Eroica) by Beethoven.
A frequent guest conductor who was very much enjoyed by the orchestra and the audiences, Kubelik made good on a promise he made to the orchestra in 1966 when he programmed the Martinu Double Concerto but had to cancel it due to a major snowstorm that snarled the entire East Coast. With orchestra members stranded and no rehearsal time, Kubelik promised to program the piece another time and substituted the complex work with a simpler, less demanding one.
That other time was 1982, when this concert was recorded.
Because of the length, it’s on two players – the top player has the Martinu and the bottom player has the Beethoven Eroica.
Classic concert by one of the legends of the podium with one of the great orchestras of the world.
Nice combination – works well for an Anti-Road Rage Wednesday.
