Continuing 90s week with one of the bands who made the party complete. Blur was the game changer in 1990 and it signaled the beginning of what some called Brit-Pop, but what was in reality the next logical step in the progression that began in the late 1980s with the Madchester scene. It was a delirious soup of styles which embraced Punk, Psychedelia, Alternative and Experimental. Essentially, they took the best of each and made it their own. And along with Blur appeared other bands, notably Oasis. And despite a bizarre marketing ploy to pit one band against the other in popularity, Blur and Oasis were the defining change of direction in music for the 90s.

Because my earliest memory of Blur was right around the time of their very first singles and album, their early material has always struck me as the stuff which changed my opinion on the then-current state of Rock music and kicked it back into high gear.

So with that in mind – here are two sets of sessions – one via Top Of The Pops from 1991 which features There’s No Other Way and Bang and the rest comes via a late 1990 Peel session. These are all songs featured in early singles and on the very first album, the one which will always be one of my favorites – because it represented something new and fresh and spilling over with life. It gave the 90s something to sing about.

It’s very loud anyway – but you can crank it even louder. My ears are still ringing.
