A blast of surreal Americana by way of Loudon Wainwright III tonight, with his backup band Slowtrain, recorded at My Father’s Place in Roslyn New York for WLIR-FM on April 9, 1978.

If the name Wainwright rings a bell, but Loudon doesn’t, that’s because Loudon Wainwright III is the father of Rufus Wainwright who has been blazing his own set of trails for a number of years now and musically bears no resemblance to the elder Wainwright.

Loudon however, has been around much longer, and has 26 albums to his credit. Grammy winner, actor, author and singer-songwriter, Loudon Wainwright could be characterized as a Folk-Humorist, and has been responsible for such memorable hits as Dead Skunk (In the Middle Of The Road).

Still active and with a number of movie and TV appearances to his credit, Wainwright has been keeping it going since 1967.

As a refresher course, or an introduction to the other members of the Wainwright family (there are a few other musical ones, including Martha and Lucy Wainwright Roche), here’s an 86 minute set featuring Loudon Wainwright along with this backup band, Slowtrain as they were recording in concert at My Father’s Place in 1978.
