In the history of World Cinema, one of the most enduring and recognizable faces of the 20th Century was that of Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni. He appeared in a string of milestone films, and became as closely associated with those dramatic leaps in modern Cinema as those directors he worked with; Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti, Michelangelo Antonioni and countless others.
His career extended from the early 1950s all the way to his death in 1997 – a remarkable run and one of the most legendary figures in Film.
In 1975, as part of a promotion for his then-latest film Down The Ancient Stairs and for his auto-biography, Mastroianni is interviewed by film critic Leonard Harris for the In Conversation Radio series.
He discusses his work, his collaborators, his process and his craft. And it makes for a riveting half-hour. Mastroianni died in 1997, but his work continues to be seen and his influence continues to be felt on newcomers.
