Something festive this week – depending on where you consult – March 21st was the 330th Birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach – or, it’s coming up on March 31st. There’s the new calendar and the old calendar.
Either way – March 2015 marks the 330th birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach.
So – to celebrate, and making something historic out of it by way of a performance, I found this complete 1950 broadcast of the St. Matthew Passion – with chorus, soloists and the Rochester Philharmonic, conducted by the legendary Erich Leinsdorf.
The performance is complete and was spread out over 2 weeks – the first part broadcast on April 1, 1950 and the second part broadcast on April 8th.
Since I doubt this performance has been commercially (or non-commercially) released, it’s something of a first and possibly the first time it’s been heard since it was originally broadcast in 1950. So it’s a special post this week on two occasions – a birthday and a rare recording to boot.
In any case – enjoy, and we’ll be back with the obscure rarities next week.
Bach plus Leinsdorf, so unexpected and promising !!!!
