Something special, rare and historic this week. A 1965 concert from the newly opened Dorothy Chandler Pavilion featuring the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Music Director Zubin Mehta and featuring the legendary Arthur Rubinstein, in music of Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. Recorded on March 5, 1965.

March 1965 marked 50 years since this inaugural series of concerts were held. The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion was a huge undertaking and it signified L.A.’s continuing commitment to the Arts. It was gala series of concerts, featuring a virtual who’s who of the concert stage as a way of showcasing what was long in planning and excitedly anticipated.

This particular concert was never broadcast, and so it’s most likely you’ll be hearing it here for the first time since it was first played in 1965.

It promises to be enjoyable. Here’s what’s on the players:

Part 1 (top player)

Mendelssohn: Overture to Ruy Blas
Beethoven: Piano Concert Number 5 “Emperor”

Part 2 (bottom player)

Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto Number 1

Sounds rather good for 50 years ago. You can turn it up if you like.

It’s Anti-Road Rage Wednesday after all . . .
