A Radio Premier this weekend. The first broadcast performance of the then-recently completed Symphony In 3 Movements by Igor Stravinsky, with the composer conducting the New York Philharmonic; the orchestra he dedicated the work to.
The premier took place during the weekly New York Philharmonic broadcasts from CBS Radio, on January 27, 1946.
I am almost dead-certain this has been issued, most likely by the New York Philharmonic. So I would imagine their sound quality is a lot better than this one. This comes from a West Coast broadcast, and long before the days of Satellite, the best it could be was a telephone line going, in this case, some 3,000 miles to Los Angeles. So, sound gets a little lost in the translation.
But it’s a major work by a major composer, who is conducting the orchestra he dedicated it to – so it’s special and I wanted to share it with you.
The sound is a bit fuzzy in places, but it’s history . . ..
