It never ceases to amaze me, the amount of talent there is, seemingly everywhere on the planet. Kris Dane is a Belgian singer-songwriter who has taken the roots of Americana very much to heart – in fact he’s assimilated it into his entire being. Already on his third album (which has just been released), Dane is in the midst of doing a promotional tour, and this set from the PIAS Nights Festival is a wonderful introduction to an artist with a lot to say and a thoroughly convincing way of saying it.

That he’s taken the feel and pathos of Rural Americana and made it his own, speaks loudly for this musician of remarkable talent. With only a backup singer and two violinists, Kris Dane paints a stunning sonic landscape that evokes the dusky atmosphere of the solitary human experience. That he’s able to evoke these feelings and emotions from across an ocean and a couple of cultures away, gives ample proof that Kris Dane is no short-lived phenomenon, but rather an artist who will be around for some time.

As part of its ongoing series of promotional concerts, PIAS (one of the great new labels currently on the scene, who are revolutionizing the business), recorded this set on April 28th of this year.

Best enjoyed with the lights off and no distractions. Listen with your eyes closed.
