Early Aerosmith this weekend. With all the changes this band has gone through over the years, you almost forget they were very much of the early Rolling Stones/rural blues school of Rock when they started out.
This is one of those early gigs, around the time of the release of their debut album for Columbia. They hadn’t been proclaimed America‘s Greatest Rock n’ Roll Band yet, but they were well on their way to become hugely popular and a staple in the diet of just about every FM Rock station in the country.
So naturally, it would be a gig from their hometown, recorded and broadcast by WBCN-FM in Boston that you get to sample just what all the initial excitement was about when they got started.
This gig comes from Paul’s Mall, a small blues and Rock club in Boston with a moderately full house. Luckily, WBCN recorded it for posterity and the sound is excellent. Shortly after this, it was concert halls and arenas.
If you’re an Aerosmith fan, you probably know about this recording. If you’re just in the process of discovering Aerosmith and have heard stories about the old days, give this one a shot and you’ll understand why everybody was so excited at the time.
