Taking a quick look at some of the highlights from the recent Motel Mozaique Festival in the Netherlands from April this year.

One of the highlights was the astonishing new group The Mysterons, consisting of members of two prominent Dutch Psych bands Jungle By Night and Peacock and fronted by the exquisitely ethereal Josephine van Schaik. Described by 3VOOR12-FM’s website as Psych Groove Poppers, The Mysterons are a whole lot more than that.

Although they freely admit to being highly influenced by 60s Psychedelia, The Mysterons are part of that wave of bands which have taken the form and extended it, shaped it and made it something new in the process. Psychedelia on its own has been straddled with a quaint nostalgia that it never really deserved in the first place – since it was considered too weird at the time to be taken seriously by the mainstream, other than its most commercial renderings.

This is something new and exciting, and I found myself riveted from the first number on. And hitting Repeat when it was over.

A lot of the credit goes to Josephine van Schaik, whose voice goes from mannered and evocative to soaring and ethereal, with a touch of Hindi vocal essence added to the mix. It’s a luxuriant vocal blend and it’s a rich experience, adding to the landscape which the band have so brilliantly painted with sound.

I would love to hear more of this band – I would love to see this band and I would be very curious how they will fare with U.S. audiences.

This is only an 18 minute session, culled from the larger festival. It certainly begs for more – there are other sessions they’ve done for 3VOOR12 (the Amsterdam FM station) and I hope to add them soon.

For now – here is that session by The Mysterons from the Motel Mozaique 2015 festival, recorded April 10th of this year.

And while you’re indulging your senses, indulge our begging by asking you to chip in what you can during our Past Daily Spring Fundraiser. We’re trying to raise enough money to keep the site running and to continue giving you the best and the rarest of Music, History and Culture – some of it new and a lot of it old. The only prerequisite is that it’s good and its important. We’re working on a Matching Grant, so anything you can chip in will count double – but we have less than 30 days to do it in. So if you could please click on the link below (the one with Teddy Roosevelt‘s photo), and make your pledge, it will make all the difference in the world.
