It was a year ago last June when I first ran across Sharon van Etten by way of a session for BBC 6 Music‘s Lauren Laverne. I was instantly taken by the haunting quality of her voice and predicted she’d be around a very long time.
Cut to a year later and she delivers a stunning set to a packed audience at Glastonbury. Not wanting to be an “I-told-you-so”, but I can give over to a certain degree of smug confidence that my initial hunch was right.
If anything, her work has grown in complexity and style. I still feel there is a certain kinship of execution between her voice and the voice of Hope Sandoval – another artist high on my list of compelling and haunting singers.
With a new ep currently out, I Don’t Want To Let You Down, Sharon van Etten continues to explore and reach new audiences. If you’ve missed her recent shows, she’s coming back to Los Angeles in August for an appearance at Nextfest at the Ace Hotel in DTLA. In the meantime, here is a taste of what you’ll be hearing by way of her Glastonbury show, just this past weekend.
No need to play loud – but listen with your eyes closed.
