The Embarrassment Of Riches Season continues – this one comes from the recently concluded Down The Rabbit Hole festival, which took place at Bergharen in The Netherlands. Ironically, the same weekend as Glastonbury – with a few cases of overlap (i.e.- Patti Smith played both festivals). I can see how a situation like this would drive any self-respecting festival goer insane, as there are just too many choices to make – way too much good music to sample – and way too little time to take it all in.
But luckily, between the BBC streaming and doing on-demand for Glasto and VPRO streaming and doing on-demand via their 3FM outlet, it’s possible to get just about everything you missed if you are, like me, sitting in the strange confines of a studio in Los Angeles, sifting through mountains of music.
So far, this has been a great and memorable year – and with bands like Other Lives continuing to explore a rich and engaging road of musical possibilities, the world is in good hands.
I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say Other Lives has wound up on a lot of must-see/must-hear lists the past few years. I keep hearing them go from strength to strength the longer they are together. This is a band not content to stay in one musical place for very long – and there is enough talent and virtuosity to be had to make them a constant source of aural stimulation – which is great for them and for us. There is nothing as frustrating as a band content to stay in one place and grow stale as the result. I’m not finding that to be the case with Other Lives.
