A dose of early 90s West Coast by way of Stone Temple Pilots, during their formative years under the influence of Grunge. Around since 1985, but as Mighty Joe Young, Stone Temple Pilots emerged with their new name and debut album in 1993 to critical and audience acclaim, and stayed that way for a good-long time, until a parting of ways in 2002, a reunion in 2008 and the much-publicized drug problems of Scott Weiland leading to his dismissal in 2012.
But that’s all in the future – the one that hadn’t arrived yet when the band played the Reading Festival in 1993. This concert catches them on the rise and in the middle of huge popularity from the release of their debut album, Core. It was recorded for posterity by the venerable BBC Radio 1, and you get to hear a 25 minute chunk of it tonight by way of a 2011 rebroadcast by BBC 6 Music.
