When Shoegaze legends Slowdive announced last year that they were reuniting it was cause for excitement and relief – mixed with a sense of apprehension that the band so influential during the 90s would recapture the spirit they left behind in 1995 when they called it a day.
When they made their festival appearance at Best Kept Secret Festival in Holland last year, those fears were quickly dispelled. And hearing them again this year, playing at the Paredes de Coura Festival in Portugal give further evidence it’s as though they never left.
One of the pivotal bands of the 90s, Slowdive continue painting their sonic tapestry with elegant brush strokes – and the 19 year gap has done nothing to diminish the hypnotic power which has been such a trademark of this remarkable band.
If you’re just getting familiar with them, or are revisiting them after a long absence, Slowdive is one of the bands giving further evidence Music is heading in some good places (well . . . .non-mainstream music). And this performance, recorded on August 19th is a good place to start.
