Hans Leygraf With Sixten Eckerberg And The Gothenburg Symphony Play Music Of Stenhammar – 1946 – Past Daily Weekend Gramophone
Something different this week. From the transcription service of Sveriges Radio in Stockholm from 1946, a radio session featuring the Gotesburg Symphony conducted by Sixten Eckerberg with Hans Leygraft, piano in a performance of the 2nd Piano Concerto by Wilhelm Stenhammar.
Wilhelm Stenhammar was probably better known during his lifetime as a pianist, considered one of the best of his generation. And even though he composed a considerable amount, it has only recently gotten the wide recognition it has deserved. But as with most countries who do their level best to the promote local musical interest, Sveriges Radio (the government-run Radio Network), broadcast performances of Stenhammar’s works have been available over the years as a way of stimulating interest in a composer whose work has justified recognition.
So this week it’s that 1946 broadcast performance of Stenhammar’s 2nd Piano concerto. There are several recent recordings of the work available, but this one hasn’t seen the light of reissue.
Enjoy and come back next week.
Thanks Gordon for that precious post, supporting with amazing musicians this too much forgotten concerto.
