CBS World News Roundup – September 21, 1989 – Gordon Skene Sound Collection

Hurricane season – and no different for September 21st in 1989 as it has been in other years.

For this September 21st, it was all about Hurricane Hugo and the wide swath the death and destruction it was leaving in its wake as it churned along the Atlantic coast of the U.S.

The Carolinas were expected to be the big target, as the Hurricane was yet to make landfall as of this broadcast. Packing 110 mile an hour winds, the Hurricane was expected to reach land sometime in the evening with a storm surge of about 10 feet. Weather Service warnings were posted and residents were urged to get to higher ground immediately.

The U.S. Virgin Islands, already hit by Hugo, was in an uproar. As looting and violence overtook St. Thomas and St. Croix. President Bush dispatched 1100 Army MP’s to retain order.

In other news, a Boeing 737 taking off from New York’s La Guardia airport, bound for Charlotte North Carolina crashed in the East River, killing 2 and critically injuring 3 others as the plane broke into three sections on impact.

And a court in Maryville Tennessee awarded temporary custody of 7 frozen embryos to Mary Sue Davis, a divorced woman who wanted them in an attempt to have a test tube baby.

And that’s a small slice of what went on, this September 21, 1989 as reported by The CBS World News Roundup.
