N.Y. Phil. – Leonard Bernstein, Cond. – Murray Perahia, Piano – June 29, 1976 – Part 2 – Gordon Skene Sound Collection

In honor of the 25th year since the passing of Leonard Bernstein, I thought I would run this 1976 concert with Bernstein as Laureate Music Director and Murray Perahia, piano soloist.

An interesting, historic program, recorded circa June 29, 1976 (no exact date, but it was broadcast on that date) featuring the U.S. Premier of Benjamin Britten‘s Suite on English Folk Tunes “A Time There Was”. Followed by a performance of William Schuman‘s Concert On English Rounds and finishing the concert with Robert Schumann‘s Piano Concerto in A Minor with Murray Perahia as Piano soloist.

It’s on two players, since it runs almost 2 hours. So here’s what’s what:

New York Philharmonic
Leonard Bernstein, Conductor
Murray Perahia, Piano

Part 1 – Top Player

1.Britten: Suite on English Folk Tunes – A Time There Was (U.S. Premier)

2. William Schuman: Concerto on Old English Rounds

Part 2 – Bottom Player

1.Robert Schumann – Piano Concerto A Minor.

A tribute to a remarkable musician, whose presence is still missed.

Enjoy the show. Editors Note: Thanks to one of our intrepid readers, the dates for this performance are – April 15-17 and 20, 1976.

And while you’re listening, please make your contribution to Past Daily’s Fall Fundraiser – we’re scraping along, but with your help and your contributions – which can be any amount, are Tax Deductible, and GREATLY APPRECIATED. 1. Gordon,

Thank you very much for posting this excellent performance and the maestro’s death announcement. Might you have his final performance from the Boston Symphony, 8/19/90, in your collection? I know that parts of this concert were commercially released by DG, but I would love to hear the broadcast complete with William Pierce’s commentary, and Bernstein’s own Arias and Barcarolles. I know Bernstein was noticeably struggling through that concert. I’m interested to know if this was noted on the broadcast.

    All the best,

    Adam

    • Hi Adam: Thanks so much for your comment. I will check and see if I have that 1990 broadcast. Something tells me I don’t because I don’t remember if the BSO broadcasts were carried in Los Angeles at the time. But if I find it, I will definitely put it up.
      Gordon
