Lou Doillon is one of those multi-talents the French seem to be so good at finding and cultivating. The daughter of film Director Jacques Doillon and British actress and singer Jane Birkin, Lou Doillon has been equally at home on a film set as she is in a recording studio, and it lends further credence to the notion that, if you do more than one thing well, do them all equally. Sadly, it doesn’t appear to be a sentiment shared over here, where the prevailing notion is do one thing well, and only that one thing. Stifles a lot of might-have-beens and frustrates more than a few actors who have tried branching out into music, only to be met with more curiosity than acceptance. Oh well – our loss.
But not so with Lou Doillon – she’s a gifted artist with a keenly sharpened point of view, and she’s been doing it since 2006.
This session, recorded in the bucolic French countryside at the analog-only Studio Kerwax, which oozes sonic warmth, is a live preview of Doillon’s latest album Lay Low, which was released on October 9th, ahead of a tour starting on October 23rd and going until the beginning of next year.
But in the meantime, here is a sample of her new album, and a opportunity to dive into the music of Lou Doillon if you aren’t already familiar and suitably knocked out like we are.
