A Guitar recital this week, recorded during the American debut of Italian Guitar virtuoso Aldo Minella in 1963. Minella, who had studied with Andre Segovia and maintained a close relationship with the legendary artist, was visiting him during a series of Master Classes in Berkeley when this session was recorded. Subsequently, Minella recorded and appeared all over the U.S. and in Europe throughout the 1960s, and in 1968 was proclaimed by Segovia as “One of the four artists of the second generation which is proud to entrust the prestige of the guitar”. His appearances were critically acclaimed – and he was hailed as the heir apparent to the legacy of Segovia.
This is one of the first recitals to have been recorded during his initial tour – it hasn’t been commercially available, although I understand Pacifica Archives have a copy. This one came via KPFK who aired it shortly after it was recorded.
