Man – live at Reading Festival 1983 – BBC Radio 1 In Concert – BBC 6 Music rebroadcast

Not all that well known in the U.S., and initially more popular in Germany than even their native UK (the band are Welsh, by the way), Man were one of those bands who took the spirit of the San Francisco Sound, the extended jam and the vibe and made it their own. Together since 1968, Man went through several personnel changes during their initial career. But through it all, they gathered a very loyal following, and even got the admiration of several heroes in the process. One being the iconic lead guitarist for Quicksilver Messenger Service, John Cipollina, who was enlisted by the band during a hectic tour in the mid 1970s.

With several albums to their credit, and some amazing music, Man weathered the storms and held it all together, until their breakup in 1976. After having gone their separate ways and solo careers, the band (with some notable personnel changes, but with more original members), reformed in 1983 and have continued on. Sadly, several original members have since passed away, but the core members of the original lineup are still together and occasionally do gigs.

This concert, recorded at the Reading Festival in 1983, was a celebration of their reunion, and the reuniting of guitarist Deke Leonard back into the fold.

It’s classic Man, with trademark jams and extended solos – and if they didn’t tell you they were from Wales, you’d swear they were straight out of Mill Valley.

Crank it up and enjoy.
