PAUW Live At Eurosonic 2016 – Nights At The Roundtable: Festival Edition

PAUW
PAUW – the nod to Psychedelia is more of an embrace than a hat-tip.

PAUW – one of the surprise (or not-so-surprise) hits at Eurosonic this year. Regarded as one of the 7 memorable acts at Eurosonic, the Dutch Psych band cast a huge spell over the crowd and took everyone on a sonic trip. In very much a similar mold as Tame Impala, PAUW have been doing it for only a few years. But in that short time, have been regarded as one of the bands to be on the lookout for.

Interesting how Psychedelia has taken center stage again, after being left dormant for so long. It’s always been on the verge of making a comeback, as far back as the early 1980s. But it never gained the mass audience it has now.

Actually, the practitioners of Psych are no longer considered cutting-edge or “too weird” as they once were in 1966 and ’67. And even though there is enough acknowledgement of Tame Impala and Pond and the wave of other bands from Australia who have taken up the mind-melting cause, they do go back to the original examples – the ones who were just not in the mainstream at the time, and have celebrated them.

Psychedelia has always been either marginalized or stereotyped; not really considered a viable genre capable of setting down examples and evolving into other things. But don’t forget, much of what became the Progressive Rock movement owes its very existence to the sonic experiments and freeform assaults of those who came well before.

So PAUW are on the radar, and as was evidenced by their reception at Eurosonic, and the tour schedule they are diving into this year (all over Europe, but you never know if they have plans to hit SXSW this year).

In any event, to give you a sample, a taste of what’s going on in other parts of the world, and what audiences have been gravitating toward in 2016, here is what PAUW were up to at Eurosonic 2016, earlier this month.

You might want to crank this one up. Just sayin’.
