Valery Gergiev leads the Marlinsky Orchestra this week in a concert featuring music of Profofiev, Shostakovich and Scarlatti with pianist Alexander Toradze joining in for the Prokofiev First Piano Concerto and the Shostakovich First Piano Concerto.

Valery Gergiev is a very busy conductor. Aside from his duties as Music Director for the Marlinsky Orchestra, he is also principal Conductor of the London Symphony, as well as principal Conductor of the Munich Philharmonic and Artistic Director of the White Nights Festival in St. Petersberg.
Alexander Toradze is probably best known for his Russian repertoire and a career that has spanned over three decades. Aside from his performing schedule, Toradze is also Professor of Piano and Indian University in South Bend. Among his prolific catalog of recordings (for both Philips and EMI) his 1998 recording of the Prokofiev Piano Concertos with Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra were universally hailed by critics as some of the best on record.
Certainly a very full concert, and a very enjoyable one, all from the Mikkeli Festival in Helsinki from July of 2011, recorded by Finnish Radio and relayed to RSR in Switzerland.
Great music to take the edge off – and since it’s the middle of the week, probably more than welcome.
